Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 173), you must meet the following requirements:

Be sponsored by an eligible child who is a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.

Meet the balance-of-family test. This means that at least half of your children must be living in Australia as Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens, or more of your children must be living in Australia as Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens than in any other country.

Meet all visa conditions and follow Australian law.
Not have already applied for or held a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (Subclass 870) visa when applying for this visa.

The Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 173) costs AUD32,065. There is an additional charge for each family member who applies with you. You pay for this visa in 2 parts called installments. You pay the first installment when you apply, and the second installment when we ask you to.

Processing Times

Applications for the Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 173) are subject to capping and queuing. The Department of Home Affairs has a limited number of visas available each year, and applications are processed in the order in which they are received.

Contributory parent visas (subclasses 173 and 143)

Family Members

You can include members of the family unit in your application when you apply. Family members include your partner and dependent children. You will be required to include details of all your family members, whether they are migrating or not when you fill out the application form.

If you have a partner, include their details in your application even if they are not applying for the visa with you. Family members who apply for the visa must meet our health and character requirements. Family members who are not coming to Australia might also have to meet our health and character requirements.

If you have a newborn child after you have applied for the visa, you will need to notify the Department of Home Affairs. You will need to provide evidence of the child’s birth and complete any necessary health checks and character assessments.

Visa Conditions

If your Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 173) is granted, you must meet all visa conditions and follow Australian laws. Some of the key visa conditions include:

You must not work for more than 20 hours per week.

You must maintain adequate health insurance while in Australia.

You must not seek any government support or assistance while in Australia.
