What Qualifications and Entry Requirements are Necessary for Teachers in Australia?

  • Before applying for your Skilled Visa, it is necessary to complete a teacher’s skills assessment by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL). This assessment is mandatory.
  • In Australia, to become a teacher, you need to have completed four years of higher education. This can be achieved through a 4-year Bachelor of Education program or a 3-year degree in any subject, followed by a 1-year PGCE/PGDE program.
  • You must complete at least 45 days of supervised teaching practice as part of your initial teacher education program.
  • You must take an IELTS Academic test to show your English proficiency. Your overall score must be at least 7.5, your speaking and listening scores must be no less than 8, and your reading and writing scores must be no less than 7.

Requirements

To be a qualified teacher in Australia, it is necessary to have completed four years of tertiary education, equivalent to full-time study. Therefore, you will have either:

  • 4 years Bachelor of Education OR
  • 3 years degree (any subject) AND 1-year PGCE/PGDE

As part of your mandatory initial teacher education program, you must provide proof of at least 45 days of supervised teaching practice within the age range of students related to your chosen occupation. Please note that work experience does not qualify as supervised teaching practice.

To teach in Australia, you need an award from GTP or SCITT that includes an academic transcript and supervised teaching practice statement issued by the institution awarding the qualification, approved by AITSL.
