Skill Assessment for IT Professionals

To apply for permanent residency in Australia, a skill assessment is required. For individuals in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) field, the Australian Computer Society (ACS) is the designated skill-assessing authority. The ACS has various skills assessment pathways depending on your qualification and work experience. Below are the different pathways summarized for you:

Post-Australian Study Skills

  • You must have completed an Australian Bachelor’s degree or higher in ICT closely related to your nominated occupation.
  • A 3-year Bachelor’s degree is considered an ICT major if 33% of courses are in ICT.
  • You must also have one year of relevant post-qualification work experience or complete an ACS professional year program

If you meet these criteria, you can apply for a skills assessment under the Post Australian Study Skills pathway.

Skills

If you do not meet the above requirement, you may still be eligible for a skill assessment under the skills pathway, which has different streams:

Bachelor’s degree or higher with an ICT Major

  • Suppose your Bachelor’s degree or higher has an ICT major closely related to your nominated occupation. In that case, you can apply for a skills assessment with two years of relevant work experience completed within the past ten or four years of relevant work experience conducted anytime.
  • Suppose your Bachelor’s degree or higher has an ICT major that is not closely related to your nominated occupation. In that case, you can apply for a skills assessment with four years of relevant work experience completed anytime.

Bachelor’s degree or higher with an ICT Minor

  • For ICT Minor closely related to the nominated occupation, you need five years of relevant work experience completed in the past ten years or six years of relevant work experience completed anytime.
  • For ICT Minor not closely related to the nominated occupation, you need six years of relevant work experience completed anytime.

Diploma or Vendor Certification

  • ICT Major closely related to your nominated occupation: 5 years of relevant work experience completed within the past ten or six years of relevant work experience completed anytime.
  • ICT Major not closely related to your nominated occupation: 6 years of relevant work experience completed anytime.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Alternatively, if you do not have a relevant qualification, you can apply under the RPL pathway.

  • Non-ICT Diploma or higher: 6 years of relevant work experience completed anytime.
  • Non-tertiary qualification (work experience only): 8 years of relevant work experience.

You must submit a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) application to apply for this pathway. The RPL requires you to demonstrate how you gained your ICT knowledge and submit two project reports.
